A Thangka is a traditional Tibetan Buddhist Painting that depicts a deity, scene or mandala.
There’s one particular Thangka that I’ve got framed and hung in my office. This Thangka is called “Way to Heaven” or “Way to Enlightenment”.
This Thangka depicts the various stages of a meditator’s journey. There is a particular sequence in which the mind-training happens for any meditator walking this path. There is a particular system and sequence of meditation practices that is designed to help the meditator go from one stage to the next.
That’s how working with oneself progresses – gradually. Along this path, the meditator takes on different teachers, gets initiated into various practices relevant to the stage they are in, and works through the obstacles.
Often, when we are stuck, overwhelmed or unfulfilled, we either soldier on, go do something radically different, grow cynical or get burnt out.
